Review: Tic Tac Toe

This review is based on the iPhone version of Tic Tac Toe.

It’s Tic Tac Toe, to go. Which is…okay? It’s exactly that with support for 1 or 2 players, and a difficulty level that scales from Easy to Hard.

Which in and of itself is a bit weird, as any decent player will never lose a round unless they get careless or bored. It’s a 3×3 grid where you take turns, and ends up as a cycle of stalemates whenever both competitors are decent. Unfortunately, that’s the total sum of the multiplayer (and online) experience, which is itself beset with a host of connection problems even over 3G; combined with the uncanny odds of making you go 2nd (I tried over 50 games to make sure), it’s not a lot of fun.

Developed by Optime Software, it looks pretty good: I dig the wood paneling and chalkboard look of the playing grid, and both of your colour palette options for the X and O are suitable too. The audio is limited to a bunch of clicks, which are entirely unremarkable.

There’s OpenFeint integration for achievements, but there’s a catch; other OpenFeint integrated games and even that program’s standalone application do not recognize my Tic Tac Toe game. It’s fine if you just want to earn them within this game, but its strange disconnect with the rest of my games from this system such as Star Defense is odd.

Tic Tac Toe is not bad for a few minutes of diversion, and it’s worth the buck it costs if you want to try it online or OpenFeint support. Nothing to write home about here, but it’s solid for what it is.
